SPA REVIEW | New York Spa in Timog, The 2019 Revisit

New York Spa in Timog, The 2019 Revisit

New York Spa in Timog (Tomas Morato) remains to be the best place for massage. If you are searching for a relaxing massage that truly delivers that needed pressure, then NY Spa is your choice of spa.

What's new?

New York Spa in Timog, The 2019 Revisit

On my recent visit, a few noticeable changes have surfaced. Can't recall whether the rates increased but I was charged 750 PhP for a common room (meaning, you share the room with other clients during the massage, without any partition; so do not be so surprised if you hear occasional chit chat from people around).

The reception still looks the same. NY Spa logo on the wall, services with rates on the glass desk. I spoke one of the two girls sitting,

Ate: Can I have your name sir?
Me: (Gives my loyalty card) Here is my name...
Ate: (In a loud tone) Ah sir XXX, pa sulat na lang ng name niyo'ng lahat.
Me: (Salamat ate sa pag broadcast).
Anyhow, after writing and choosing the service - me with the gang, all went inside. The wooden locker room is still the same as well as the mirror.

It was not so full yet when we went in, but what I noticed was the difference in the crowd. Back in the early 2000s, when spa was not so popular yet - the profile of the people who frequent NY Spa is mainly the toned and muscular ones; a few older folks, but now the demographics has shifted to the more heavy weights.

And there is really nothing wrong with this type of crowd, I am an advocate of #notobodyshaming and #feelconfidentlybeautiful.

At the end of the day, everyone pays so who are we to say anything. We are all equal in this place. The best thing to do if one does not see himself comfy with the crowd is to find an alternative. As for me, I like the quality of massage in NY Spa and that's all I can say.

The steam is busted, while the wooden flooring in the dry sauna is displaced. Unfortunately, this is something that really disgusted me on my recent visit, not only was the sauna packed - but the smell of rotting wood permeated in the air. I do hope that they fix this soon.

The shower curtains were also replaced by more opaque material (compared to the the transparent ones). There's more privacy in taking shower, in short.

Massage

There are two similar massage services in the list of NY Spa - (1) Signature & (2) Authentic. The authentic massage has stretching included in it. I like stretching so I picked this one.

The strokes are constant. The pressure is consistent, just the right amount of pressure in every part and muscle. Now, the stretching is where it got tricky.

Masseur was trying to pop the bones, to the point it got way scary. I am very anxious about my spinal cord so when he tried to do the arm tied position to swing me on the sides, I kept fighting for my dear spine lest I run the risk of displacement or slip disc.

So, a word of caution - always tell your masseur (if doing the stretch) to take the spinal cord with care.

Just a few thoughts on New York Spa

VERY IMPORTANT: NEVER go to NY Spa kapag Saturday! The place is too jampacked at nakaka stress pramis (unless you prefer to be in this sardine like scenario in the sauna and steam). The lobby was empty, so I guess that's what I liked on saturdays. hahaha

Preferred - Monday to Thursday, 4pm to 9pm.

OKAY, now on some few things
  • I noticed that some spa goers have forgotten that a spa is not a mall or a coffee shop where you can talk so loudly anytime you want. You better brush up on Spa Etiquette 101, it can teach you a thing or two.
  • The sauna is already hot. Please resist the temptation to keep pouring water on the stone heater. Yung totoo, nakikiuso lang?
  • If you enter either the sauna or the steam, please make up your mind. Wag naman sana labas masok, labas masok. The heat leaves the room along with your indifference towards people inside.
  • If you are not happy about anyone in the area, just keep it to yourself. Yung may mga excess smirk and rolling eyes, you can keep them in your lockers first. When you go home, you can roll your eyes to infinity and beyond.

I still put NY Spa on top of my Spa list.
Will just try to avoid Saturdays and Sundays. :)
