Turn up the Music
The first step to becoming a great hip-hop dancer is feeling the
music. Blast some music by your favorite artist and groove to it. You need to
feel engulfed by the music, so you should ensure that you turn the volume high
enough to feel the bass pumping through you. In fact, most hip-hop dancers fall
in love with the music before learning to dance.
Wear Comfy Clothes
According to the owner of Just for Kix, wearing the
right clothes will determine the outcome of your routine. The best clothes to
wear are loose fitting ones that make you feel comfortable and do not restrict
your movement. Choose footwear that does not grip the floor too hard to ensure
that you can spin easily.
If the soles of your shoes catch the floor during fast moves, you
might end up with a twisted ankle or broken leg.
Relax Your Body
When you are dancing hip-hop, the last thing you want is to look
stiff. Make sure that you look relaxed and stand tall with your neck and
shoulders loose. When you feel relaxed, dancing will come easily as you move to
the beat. However, if you feel nervous, you will not be able to let go of your
inhibitions.
Keep Your Feet
Shoulder-width Apart
When starting to dance, this position is a safe bet because it will
make it easier to try any dance move. Ensure that you bend your knees slightly
to make moving easier. Moreover, starting in this neutral position will prevent
you from looking too stiff.
Keep Arms at Your
Sides
As you start to move to the music, you should keep your arms at your
sides. You should not keep your hands in your pockets or cross them over your
chest. Moreover, fidgeting with your hands will make you look anxious and could
dampen your experience.
Rock Your Hips
As a hip-hop dancer, you need to move your hips a lot. Make sure that
you rock your hips to the left and right depending on the flow of music. Before
the music starts, you should rock your hips to warm-up and get ready to dance.
You do not have to do what other people are doing but at least know the right moves. Just relax and do what comes naturally instead of copying what others are doing. You can either do some popular dance moves or make up your own. Even if you do not know what you are doing, a little confidence will go a long way.
Watch Videos and Learn
You can use YouTube as a learning tool if you want to perfect your dancing skills. Copy the dance moves that inspire you and practice them. You can also watch a friend of your dancing and copy his or her moves. Once you learn the style, you can add a few unique moves to make it your own.
Take Lessons
If you are not getting anywhere on your own, you should consider paying for dance lessons. Find an inspirational dancer and ask him whether he offers dance lessons. You can also find instructors at your local gym because hip-hop dance is a great workout.
Keep Dancing
No matter how awful you think you are, practice will turn you into a
great dancer. Just keep dancing and do not give up.
