2017 UAAP S80 Cheerdance Competition

With the recently concluded UAAP S80 Cheerdance Competition, spectators were in for unexpected results. The reigning 4peat champions, NU was slated to grab its 5peat (something only UST has done for the record), but ended up outside the podium after it tied 4th place with FEU. The returning UP Pep Squad was expected to give everyone a run for their money, but disappointingly ending at the 6th spot (a few points away from DLSU); with ADMU consistent with their rank as last.

This year was certainly not what we were expecting to happen. There could be numerous reasons and among them- pressure and tension. For all strong teams, they thought they had it in the bag, but succumb to their inner struggles. Evident of which are the many faults and tumbles of the teams this year.

The complete results: First ADU - 663.50; Second UST - 638.50; Third UE - 634.50; Fourth/Fifth NU - 610.50 / FEU - 610.50; Sixth UP - 575.50; Seventh DLSU - 567.50; Eighth ADMU - 558.50.

Potential Culprits

As pointed out earlier, there are numerous factors that could have affected the not so impressive performances of the teams, among them are, (1) weather conditions, (2) finals week in respective universities and most importantly (3) Miss Universe post-hype.

Among the things mentioned, it was perhaps the two pronged effect of Miss Universe 2017 that degenerated the performance the cheering squads. First, the live airing of the pageant was too early making the audience get up too early and sleep late. Second, the dismal result of Rachel Peter's top 10 finish gravely dampened the spirit of the Filipinos. In local parlance, "nawalan ng gana" could have been the result.

Of course these are just conjectures, nonetheless CDC will always be an event that we'll look forward to watching year after year.
