What Makes One Leave His Job Behind?
I was conducting earlier my scheduled Skype interviews and there was the recurring question of why one wants to jump from one company to another.
How do you really answer the question- why would you like to move out of your current company?
One common answer was that there was no room for growth or opportunity. But one thing that really caught my interest was the answer from the Belgian candidate. She was 51, has two kids, and seemed to be doing well in life.
But what does one do when life becomes routinary and does not give much meaning. Then one has to change.
I was taken aback after learning that she not only wanted to have a change of air, but was soon separating from her husband. It was the most sincere interview I had in my tenure as the pseudo "HR" personnel in our small company.
Her answer to the question - why she wanted to move, was that "Life is too short, and I need to do what I planned to do and that is to be able to work in another country..."
That made me re-think about my current career path.
Life indeed is short, and it is important that we do what makes us happy. However, the thought of what would make me happy is irrelevant at this point since there are bills to pay.
At 31, I don't even have a clue where I am heading. But I might have to think about what my answer would be to the same question - what would make me move to another company?
